Viral daredevil, 30, dies after falling into volcanic crater, authorities confirm

An adventurer known as the 'Spider-Man of Yemen' has died after falling into a volcanic crater, authorities have confirmed.

Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar was trying to climb the Hardah Dam on Friday, June 12, when he lost his grip and fell into the crater, per the country's Civil Defense Authority, which posted a video of the moment on Facebook.

Rescue teams began searching for the daredevil and found his body about three feet below the crater's water surface after rescue efforts that lasted about four and a half hours.

The Civil Defense Authority wrote on social media that the operation was carried out in "extremely difficult conditions" due to the region's remoteness and the "intensity of the volcanic heat," translated from Arabic.

It also singled out Abdo Mohamed Al-Qan, the commander of the rescue team, for his efforts, writing in a statement, "He did not seek fame or applause, but performed his humanitarian and patriotic duty with courage and sincerity."

The crater, located near the city of Dhamar, in the southwest of Yemen, about 109 miles south of the capital Sana'a, is thought to be almost 400 feet deep, with a hot sulfurous lake that ranges in temperature from 104°F to 140°F at the bottom.

Antar gained fame on social media in the region for his feats, amassing almost 60,000 followers on Instagram after posting videos of himself climbing some of Yemen's rugged landscapes.

In a statement, the Civil Defense Authority urged people to be cautious when visiting natural and volcanic sites in the country, keep away from edges and follow public safety guidelines.

PEOPLE reached out to the Civil Defense Authority for further comment but did not receive an immediate response.
