Social media reacts as Trump appears to doze off during meeting
Donald Trump gave plenty of fuel to the social media fire this weekend when he appeared to fall asleep during a televised Oval Office meeting.
The US President was seen dozing off during the meeting at around 12pm in the White House.
The viral moment is from a live broadcast of a press conference, and shows Dr Mehmet Oz was talking about people being able to ‘go to bed’, while Trump is filmed nodding off.
The event came after the Trump administration announced it had reached agreements with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to lower the price of some GLP-1 weight loss medications.
Unsurprisingly, this has given social media users a field day and the 79-year-old has received a fair bit of mocking online.
One user wrote: ‘Trump slumping in his chair and falling asleep in the Oval Office during a press conference should be a bigger story. Sleepy Donald.’
Another commented: ‘I am at a loss for words. Trump is fast asleep at an 11am televised meeting, drooped face, incoherent speech, slurred words?????? This is 10x worse than what Biden did at that debate, and he was literally run out of town for it.’
A third added: ‘Poetic… Trump is slumped over asleep while Dr Oz touts obesity drugs to help sleep and dementia.’
Yet another shared: ‘I still think the biggest story in the country should be Trump admitting he has no idea who he’s pardoning, but a close second is probably the fact that this guy can’t sit through a meeting without falling asleep.’
Many pointed out the irony behind Trump calling his predecessor ‘Sleepy Joe’ throughout his campaign.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has repeatedly mocked Trump over the past few months while using his signature social media style, posted: ‘DOZY DON IS BACK!’
Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki also poked fun at Trump for his apparent power nap.
She said: ‘I mean, that was him in the White House today, basically appearing to nod off while his surgeon general talked about, of all things, really, dementia, obesity and sleep loss. I mean, it kind of feels a little too on the nose, doesn’t it?’
Another notable moment during the press conference came when a man passed out right behind Trump. The White House later reported that the man was ‘OK’ despite growing concern.
