Miley Cyrus Releases Song With Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood as ‘Peace Offering’ to Her Dad
On Sept. 19, the Grammy winner dropped a new song called “Secrets" that she made with Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood and dedicated to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same,” she captioned a clip of the video on Instagram.
“Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music. This song is for my dad.”
“Secrets / I wanna keep your secrets / Like sunlight in the shadows / Like footsteps in the grass / I won’t ever break my promise,” she sings in the beginning of the track.
“Anywhere you run / You know I’ll follow,” she later sings.
Billy Ray Cyrus acknowledged his daughter's new song the same day it premiered.
"Best birthday gift a dad could ever ask for. ❤️ Thank you @mileycyrus for Secrets... a song straight from your heart to mine," he wrote in the caption of an Instagram post. "The memories we've made together mean the world to me, and seeing you soar with your music makes me prouder every single day."
Billy Ray Cyrus previously teased the track the month prior.
“For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called Secrets and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it! I love you Mile ❤️,” he wrote on Instagram in August.
“Secrets” is one of two bonus tracks on the deluxe version of Miley Cyrus’ most recent album, “Something Beautiful,” joining “Lockdown” with David Byrne. The deluxe album came out Sept. 19.
What Happened Between Miley Cyrus and Her Dad?
The “Flowers” singer had been estranged from her father in the wake of his divorce from her mother, Tish Cyrus.
In May, Miley Cyrus acknowledged there were issues in her family.
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years,” she wrote on her Instagram stories. “Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else,” she wrote. “I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.”
That same month, she also opened up about the state of her relationship with her dad in an interview with The New York Times.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” she said.
“And so I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
Billy Ray Cyrus is in a relationship with Elizabeth Hurley, while Tish Cyrus is now married to “Prison Break” star Dominic Purcell. Cyrus said her parents have also been able to get past their marriage, which helped her do the same.
“But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,” she told The New York Times.
“I’m being an adult about it. At first it’s hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, “Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy. My child self has caught up.”
