'Mr Calm' Bellamy looks to Skopje after opening win

Image
Wales captain Ben Davies described head coach Craig Bellamy as "Mr Calm" after his side made hard work of their opening World Cup qualifier to beat Kazakhstan. Wales were well below their best but won 3-1 against a stubborn Kazakhstan side, who are ranked 110th in the world, in Cardiff  Bellamy had a reputation for being a fiery character during a successful but often controversial playing career at clubs such as Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester City. Since taking charge of Wales last year, however, the former Wales captain has shown himself to be more mature and considered. "They made it really difficult for us, they were compact. You could see in the first half we forced a lot of balls when we didn't really need to," Davies, who scored Wales' second goal, told Match of the Day Wales. "In the second half we were much more disciplined and we got the job done, which is the most important thing. The goal [Davies scored] came at such a perfect ...

Sean Brady upset Leon Edwards with a dominant display as he submitted the Briton in the fourth round of the pair's welterweight bout at UFC London. The American, 32, out-grappled Edwards throughout before ending the contest with a guillotine choke. The defeat is 33-year-old Edwards' second in a row after losing his welterweight title to Belal Muhammad in July. "I took this fight the day I got out of the hospital with my wife and our newborn baby. I knew I could do that and I think I belong in the top three for sure," said Brady. "Dana [White] gave me a wonderful opportunity to come out here. I love the UK fans, sorry I had to do that to your boy but lots of respect." Brady was a late replacement in the contest for Australia's Jack Della Maddalena, who will instead face Muhammad for the belt at UFC 315 on 10 May. Interactions between Edwards and Brady had been low-key during fight week, with the Briton putting much of his focus into regaining the belt. ...

Man Utd set MASSIVE Rashford asking price

Image
Manchester United have raised the asking price for Marcus Rashford this summer after his bright start to his loan spell at Aston Villa. Rashford joined Villa on loan in January until the end of the season with a reported option to make the deal permanent for around €47.5 million. The 27-year-old had been on the market after the attacker's controversial interview with Henry Winter before Christmas. The attacker admitted that he was “ready for a new challenge” and he was subsequently exiled from the squad before joining Villa. Rashford has impressed at Villa so far with four assists in all competitions, earning him a recall to the England national team squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers. And former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown, who has inside information at the club, says that Rashford’s price has now increased. Rashford asking price increased “Man United are going to demand a high fee for him,” he told Football Insider. “Their asking price has increased after he was re...

Greenland Sharks Can Live for 400 Years. Scientists Are Using DNA to Unravel Their Longevity Secrets

Image
Greenland sharks are large, mysterious creatures that roam the chilly waters of the north Atlantic and Arctic oceans. These elusive animals are considered the longest-living vertebrates on the planet, and they can survive to be roughly 400 years old. But how and why do Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus) live to such an advanced age? For a long time, scientists thought it had to do with their cold habitat and minimal movements. But now, new research is using the sharks’ DNA to unravel the mysteries of their impressive lifespans. While sequencing a Greenland shark’s genome, researchers in Japan discovered multiple copies of genes that might help explain why the animals don’t often get cancer, reports New Scientist’s Chris Simms. They outlined their findings in a new paper published February 22 on the bioRxiv preprint server. The paper has not been peer reviewed. The genes in question influence what’s known as the NF-κB signaling pathway, which supports the body’s immune sys...

Arlington Cemetery strips content on black and female veterans from website

Image
Arlington National Cemetery has scrubbed from its website information and educational materials about the history of black and female service members. Some of the content unpublished from the site was on veterans who had received the nation's highest military recognition, the Medal of Honor, according to military news site Task & Purpose. The content removal is part of a larger effort by President Donald Trump to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices in the military and throughout the federal government. Approximately 400,000 veterans are buried in the Army-run cemetery, which was established after the US Civil War at the home of the South's general, Robert E. Lee. On the cemetery's website, internal links that directed users to webpages with information about the "Notable Graves" of dozens of black, Hispanic and female veterans were missing on Friday. The pages contained short biographies about veterans such as Gen Colin L Powell, the f...

Kylian Mbappe fired Real Madrid back to the top of La Liga

Image
Juan Foyth opened the scoring for the hosts but two Mbappe strikes in six first-half minutes earned the points for Madrid. It puts Los Blancos three points clear of previous leaders Barcelona, who visit third-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday night. Villarreal remain fifth in La Liga, five points off the Champions League qualification places after back-to-back league defeats. They started the stronger, with top scorer Ayoze Perez twice denied by Thibaut Courtois in the opening seven minutes. After Courtois tipped a low curling Perez effort behind, Villarreal scored from the resulting corner when captain Foyth slammed home amid a goalmouth scramble. This sparked Madrid and Mbappe into life and they equalised 10 minutes later. Mbappe played a through ball to Brahim Diaz and, when his shot was saved by Diego Conde, the Frenchman was on hand to score the rebound. After netting, Mbappe ran straight back to the centre-circle without celebrating. He meant business and showed it again on...

Arsenal make Thomas Partey contract decision as Barcelona lead three-club chase

Image
Arsenal are not expected to offer Thomas Partey a new contract, opening up the possibility of a free transfer to Barcelona or two other European giants. Manager Mikel Arteta has repeatedly turned to the former Atletico Madrid midfielder, who can also be deployed at right-back, but may not have that option next season as Partey's contract expires in June. Journalist Charles Watts, who closely reports on Arsenal, states the north Londoners have not begun negotiations over a new deal for Partey and have no intention of doing so. If the 31-year-old does become a free agent in July, he won't be short of suitors. Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are all named as interested parties, while there is also thought to be admiring glances from Saudi Arabia. Partey's preference, however, is thought to be remaining in Europe. Alongside Partey, Arsenal are expected to lose fellow midfielder Jorginho. The Italy international was the subject of intense interest from Brazilian cl...

Image
Tyson Fury sent Donald Trump a fiery message of support Friday after the US president's disastrous White House press conference with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.  The peace talks between Ukraine and Russia came to a screeching halt in Washington DC when Trump kicked Zelensky out of the White House following a blistering shouting match between the two leaders.   The tense war of words that played out inside the Oval Office Friday quickly went off the rails when Trump took offense of how Zelensky treated his vice president JD Vance in front of the cameras.  And British boxer Fury appeared to relish Trump's outburst, capturing the moment on his Instagram story.  The 36-year-old, who retired from the ring last year, shared a clip of the heated exchange to the social media platform with a rallying message for the US Commander-in-Chief.  'Come on @realdonaldtrump sort it out baby,' wrote 'The Gypsy King.'  Fury continued to show his support ...
