Reliance Jio to disrupt the existing telecom industry?

“Free voice calls  and no roaming charges forever.”

“Data @ Rs. 50 per GB”

“Reliance Jio plans ranging from 149 /- per month to up to 4,999 /-”

“For students, 25% more data”

“Stable prices even during festivals i.e. Diwali, new year etc”

“Lowest tariffs in the world for international calling”

After these announcements were made by Reliance Industries’ Chairman “Mukesh Ambani” on Thursday afternoon at the 42nd Annual General meeting, the shares of India’s premier carrier Bharti Airtel Ltd. dropped by 6.3 percent. Another smaller rival, Idea Cellular’s shares too collapsed by 10.5 percent. This downfall happened even after these rivals have started lowering their prices to prevent their customers from switching over to Reliance Jio.

In order to attract customers, the Reliance Jio has made – voice, data and access to its apps – absolutely free for its users. Even though it is an interesting technique to lure its rival’s customers to make the switch, however, the freebies would end on December 31st, 2016.

From January 1st, 2017 onwards, the customers would be billed on the basis of their chosen plans. The basic postpaid plan starts from Rs 149 for 1 month. 149 plan offers free unlimited voice, 100 SMSes, and just 0.3 GB data. The next plan is for 499 which offers free unlimited voice, 100 SMSes, and 4 GB data. There are five more plans that range from Rs 999 to Rs 4,999, for users with higher data requirements.

The top-end data plans i.e. between Rs 1,499 and Rs 4,999 also offer free international calling  minutes ranging between 30 to 100 minutes.

Reliance Jio’s prepaid plans start from Rs 19 with a validity of a day, in which the user gets 100 MB data and  200 MB free WiFi data during the day and unlimited 4G data at night between 2am and 5am. While in the next plan priced at Rs 129, Jio gives 750 MB for 7 days validity 4G LTE data and 1.5GB free WiFi data. Apart from data, users also get unlimited voice calls , 100 SMSes and free subscription of Jio Apps with all the plans.

“We Indians have come to appreciate and applaud Gandhi-giri, now we can all do ‘data-giri’, which is an opportunity to do unlimited good things with unlimited data,” Ambani said at the AGM.

He also mentioned that “Jio’s network will cover 90 percent of India’s population by March, 2017.”
