Air Quality Index (AQI) measurements from the US Embassy clocked Delhi at 999 on Monday – which is basically off the charts. The city is at the ‘Hazardous’ level of 500, CNN reported.
India’s next most polluted city, coal and industry-heavy Chandrapur, recorded levels of 824, according to the World Air Quality Index.
By comparison, the highest AQI level recorded Monday in Baoding — China’s most polluted city — was 298.
During the smog weekend, the government released an emergency ruling asking schools to be shut for the entire week and construction work to be halted. Officials stated that the number of vehicles allowed on the street may be curbed if the situation does not abate.
